Arbutus presents NYE party in Vancouver, BC

Here at Arbutus we are taking our game westward -- you will find our bands in Vancouver, British Columbia this winter. For New Years Eve 2011, the sickest, next-level party will be held at eatART in collaboration with Unfamiliar Records and the Love Dancing crew. Catch local superstars Makeout Videotape play with Grimes, Sean Nicholas Savage, Blue Hawaii, Resorts (mem. Brasstronaught), and Paula (mem. Silly Kissers). No Gold will also be DJing alongside Love Dancing and Cadence Weapon. Tickets for this unforgettable night are already sold-out, but a Twitter account will be set up for the evening to announce capacity. There may be more spots available. Cool!

However, if you do miss this night, we will be preforming again at the Zoo Zhop on Jan 2nd. You can see Grimes, Sean, Blue Hawaii, Paula play all over again with the help of Terror Bird for an Arbutus Records showcase (Zoo Zhop 223, Main Street, $8 - 7pm, ).

SEAN NICHOLAS SAVAGE MUSIC VIDEOS see the light of day

The Ghost is White video all our friends have seen, but I reckon it's pretty new to everybody else!

and this other video is just so well-made and evocative of a very specific feeling I just had to post it.

I guess I don't have much else to say because I'm a pretty bad blogger.

On a crazier and unrelated note, Seb and myself are listening to Autechre. I've never really listened to it before but its pretty crazy. So he tells me, it is all analog.

He is telling me its stupid that I'm putting this on in the same post as Sean but I'm going to do it anyway!

FIN FIN BALTYMOORE

I went to Toronto this weekend to play a show and came upon an unexpected surprise: Fin, my musical soul-mate. If you like Grimes, you will probably like this. It's like a sexy lady version of How to Dress Well or something. I highly suggest that anybody check it out.

I also apologize for this shitty box.com embedded thing, I don't really know how to use the internet....

Erotic City & Jordache love

One of our favorite venue spaces shut down permanently, the night before our first anniversary. Instead of dancing to Flow Child and Grimes until the morning, as planned, we caught some early zzz's. Here's a video our friend and Arbutus intern David Cowan captured at one of the last parties at Silver Door, when Rollie of Cadence Weapon fame and members of Pat Jordache and Silly Kissers performed as Prince.

Later Dolly Parton’s wig and jacket got ripped off and some ghouls got a little too rowdy for the Artist Formerly Known As. Someone pointed out that the bongos come in at 4:20. Silver Door was a good ride while it lasted...

Hey, also, speaking of Pat Jordache, I'm listening to the FUTURE Songs tape right now and you should too, it's really doing it for me this morning... You can stream it, download it for pay what you can (sugg. $5) or buy the tape (which is clearly the better option) right here.

SEAN NICHOLAS SAVAGE Mutual Feelings of Respect and Admiration: Release!

Sean Nicholas Savage, who returns from months abroad with the new album Mutual Feelings of Respect and Admiration, will be celebrated on Arbutus' first birthday!

Club Lambi / 4465 Saint-Laurent, Montreal
$5 Door or Buy a $12 record and get in free!
Featuring...
SEAN NICHOLAS SAVAGE
SILLY KISSERS
D'EON
Arbutus Records has now existed for one full year! This burgeoning Montreal-based label has seen a lot of growth over the past twelve months, and has decided there is no better way to celebrate than with its' oldest and most prolific artist, Sean Nicholas Savage.

Mutual Feelings of Respect and Admiration is now available on 12'' vinyl in record shops across Canada, or for $12 + shipping off the website (email Jasper at orders@arbutusrecords.com with your address). The record comes with a free digital download, which includes two bonus tracks: the original mixes of Friendship and Yes I Need You!

Savage himself has evolved dramatically from album to album, and offers his latest as a modern disco experiment. Mutual Feelings of Respect and Admiration is a collaborative project involving producers Sebastian Cowan and David Carriere (Silly Kissers). The album, initially recorded onto reel-to-reel tape, was then given over to Carriere who creatively remixed and arranged Savage's songs. This unusual project is pulled off with great success: breezy synth lines and pitched vocals gives the whole recording a nostalgic, yet eerie feeling. In sum it allows Savage's brilliant and timeless songwriting to find the modern listener at mind and heart. Perfectly poppy and aesthetic, its' depth is developed by the rich spacing and layering of the remix process.

SILLY KISSERS ON A YACHT

Download "You Could Even Like Me" (right click/ctrl-click to save)

GREATSHOWS

(D'eon with his new haircut!!)

So I've been peer pressured into writing a blog post but I've got some good shit.

Firstly, I'd like to announce two incredible shows. On Nov 6th, for Sean Nicholas Savage's album launch, the extremely handsome D'eon and the unbelievably charismatic Silly Kissers will be playing to celebrate the modern masterpiece; Mutual Feelings of Respect and Admiration. This is honestly the best line up I can think of.

Except that later on (after-party) an equally good line up consisting of Flow Child and myself (Grimes) and probably some other people will also play!

Anyway, you'll regret missing either of these shows (mtl), which are actually one show but in two separate locations (lambi and ++secret++) ???

I'd also like to point out that D'eon is sporting a new haircut and some great new clothes he got in Halifax so you should come check out his stylesss

POP is here!

I woke up feeling like it's Christmas and that's because Pop Montreal is here! Now I'm drinking coffee and getting my schedule ready for tonight while listening to this HOT TRACK- D'Eon covering Swans' Children of God via Daily Print. A daily publication Palimpsest Magazine & Art POP will co-publish at DHC / ART throughout the festival. Listen to it here.

In other news, if you're in town this week- Arbutus big cheese Sebastian Cowan will be part of a discussion alongside Sean Michaels (Said the Gramophone), Jesse Locke (Planet Tapes, Texture Magazine), Aaron Levin (Weird Canada, Cantor Records) as part of the Pop Montreal Symposium' Growing Hobby Labels !

"When your obsession becomes a necessary venture. We take a look at what drives the music collector and appreciator to venture into distribution on a small scale, and where it can go from there."

We will also be launching the new Grimes album Halfaxa. Pre-order the CD now at orders@arbutusrecords.com, for $8+Shipping and receive a free poster!

The only person who won't be there is our dear Sean Nicholas Savage, presently elsewhere in Europe. Preparing himself for his anticipated return to our northern home, he is tactfully in time to brighten our waning daylight with a brand new album of disco songs. Recorded on Arbutus' sketchy tape machine, and then completely remixed by David Carriere of Silly Kissers, this is an exceptional album.

Listen below to a song off the album, and visit his myspace for more

Trevor Barton - Little Black Baby : A Book Of Short Stories

Trevor Barton's first collection of short stories, Little Black Baby, captivatingly presents a delirious cartography of contradictory landscapes, each couched in a new, equally obscure epoch. Consistency is nonetheless unmistakable in the idiosyncratic designs etched into corners or over the titles of chimerical cities, and in the pervading atmosphere of an obscene yet captivating climate.

Beautifully illustrated in ink by Rosa Aiello, the book retails mail order for $8 + shipping from the shop page.
