Living separately in Montreal and New York, brothers Andy and Edwin White put together Now I am Become. After their 2009/10 brilliant streak of jam tapes including An When (Black Country) and Dick Nights - on DoesAre - Arbutus is proud to announce the release of a 12'' vinyl. This record is heavy - distorted vocals, guitars and drums rip through many tracks, but a certain analog softness rounds off what would otherwise be harsh tonality. 70's folk, southern, psychedelic are all appropriate to describe these melodies. The a'capella sessions which sparkle the record are beautiful; recorded in a massive concrete room, the echos sounds like the rest of the album - organic, warm and familiar.
The brothers seem to change wildly from release to release: from sampled-based pop songs to American folk, or 20 minute kraut-rock jams. But the raw spirit and pure character which haunts all of their music turns unpredictability into a unique kind of relief - it always feels good to listen to Tonstartssbandht.
Out on May 17th 2011 on 12'' Vinyl ($12) and Worldwide Digital, you can now pre-order Now I Am Become. Email orders@arbutusrecords.com to reserve your copy!
